JUST A GROWING LAD

I used to run where now I walk to the lengthening crest,
Where I before surmounting it must now take a rest.
We leaped the fences way back then in our youthful past,
And skipped along from rock to rock to make a longer cast.
We did not know what time would do to slow our willing stride,
Nor know how much old age would wound our ever youthful pride.
For still our frailties we resist; the loss of strength, the pain,
The knowledge that the life we've lived will not be lived again.
We did not have the wisdom then that we may well have now,
But most of it is useless stuff this experience and know-how,
Where was it when we needed it back then in times gone by?
It seems that we are seeing best when life's time dulls the eye.
Oh well, we have our dreams and thoughts we surely never had,
Back in the days when I was young and just a growing lad.
