FLATTERY

Oh I could write just pleasing words for you,
Flattering your fancy that you think me true
But then 'twould be myself I'd tend to please,
Stating no words with which no one agrees.
But I am not so false nor yet so vain,
That by your promotion I would seek self gain,
That all the flattery; all my words so fair,
Are chosen carefully to exaggerate my care.
'Tis not that I am insensitive to offer praise,
Nor lack the kindness reflected in my gaze,
Nor tempted not by your demure repose,
But my true self I'd rather to you disclose.
Thus in my reading of the words you write,
I'll express my scorn; not always my delight
